How to upgrade a faux-fur jacket hood to a real fur trim
Many winter parkas from brands such as Fjällräven, The North Face, Woolrich, Superdry, Zavetti Canada, Columbia, Eddie Bauer, Alpha Industries, L.L.Bean and Moncler are sold with detachable synthetic faux-fur hood edging. Upgrading that synthetic strip to a natural coyote, silver fox, black fox or raccoon fur ruff—or replacing a worn faux ruff with a fresher high-density trim—depends entirely on matching the hood's physical fastening and centimetre length rather than the jacket brand name.
Identify how the factory faux-fur trim detaches from the hood
Factory faux-fur ruffs typically attach using one of four constructions: a concealed coil or tooth zipper along the outer brim, metal or plastic snap poppers, elastic button loops that hook over hood-mounted buttons, or a stitched seam inside the hood channel. Detach your existing synthetic trim partially and inspect the connection from end to end before choosing a replacement.
- Separate the hood-removal zipper at the neck from the fur-trim fastener on the brim.
- Note whether the hood uses a zipper, press-stud poppers, button loops or stitches.
- Keep the detached faux-fur strip so you can photograph its backing side by side with the hood.
Measure the backing strip and the hood seam in centimetres
Because synthetic faux-fur backing is often cut from stretchy knit tape or padded fabric binding, measuring the detached strip while pulling it taut can overstate the required length. Lay the jacket hood flat on a table, follow the fastening line with a flexible metric tape without stretching the cloth, and record the distance from the first fastener to the last fastener in centimetres.
- Measure the hood-side attachment track first, then compare the detached faux-fur backing.
- For snap poppers or buttons, record both total length and centre-to-centre stud spacing.
- Never measure across the outer tips of the fur pile.
Matching zippers vs matching snap poppers and button loops
When upgrading a zippered faux-fur hood (such as on a Columbia Marquam Peak Fusion, L.L.Bean Baxter State Parka or Moncler Fulmarusse), the replacement must either match the existing zipper gauge and slider direction or use a complete mating track. When upgrading a button-loop or snap-popper hood (common on Superdry Everest, Fjällräven Nuuk, Alpha Industries N-3B or Eddie Bauer Superior Down parkas), recording the exact fastener count and spacing allows us to review how the new backing should be prepared.
- Count every snap stud, button or loop from left to right along the hood rim.
- Photograph both end fasteners and one middle fastener next to a metric ruler.
- Ask for a fit review if the spacing between buttons is uneven or asymmetrical.
Choosing between natural coyote, fox, raccoon and premium faux fur
Once you have recorded the fastening and centimetre length, select the material and visual profile that suits your coat. Natural coyote offers a classic multi-toned guard-hair ruff; silver fox, black fox and white fox provide a dense, plush silhouette; natural raccoon delivers broad, feathered volume; and our faux-fur trims keep a 100% textile construction for customers who prefer synthetic materials.
- Check each product page to confirm whether the listing is natural fur or faux fur.
- Compare pile colour against your parka fabric in natural daylight.
- Review care differences between natural leather-backed pelts and synthetic textile trims.
Model-by-model upgrade examples across popular parka brands
