Jacket hood zipper & snap compatibility guide across winter parka brands
Outerwear brands use markedly different fastening architectures to attach a fur ruff to a parka or bomber hood, and even a single brand can change zipper gauges, slider orientation or button spacing between model generations. This technical compatibility reference explains how hood attachment systems work across the 17 brands we cut for and what to verify on your own garment before ordering.
Detachable zipper tracks: Canada Goose, Moose Knuckles, Nobis & Pyrenex
Many expedition and urban down parkas use a single-track zipper sewn along the outer hood rim or inside a protective fabric flange. Compatibility depends on three variables: the exact seam-to-seam track length in centimetres, the tooth type and gauge (such as moulded coil vs tooth element), and which side carries the slider box and insertion pin. Never assume a 65 cm zipper from one brand or production year will mesh with another without checking the hardware.
- Measure along the zipper teeth from end stop to end stop with the hood relaxed.
- Photograph both ends of the zipper half remaining on the jacket hood.
- Keep heritage fur-trimmed editions separate from newer furless hood designs.
Shaped signature collars & multi-part bibs: Mackage & Moncler
Luxury down coats from Mackage (such as Dixon, Edward, Adali, Kay, Trish and Calla-XZ) and Moncler (such as Boed, Boedic, Fulmarusse and Maya) vary between standard detachable hood ruffs and sculpted wraparound Signature Collars or removable inner hooded bibs. A standard U-shaped hood ruff does not replace an integrated coat collar or a zip-out bib unless the fastening line is confirmed from photographs first.
- Check the model suffix on your Mackage or Moncler interior garment tag.
- Distinguish the outer hood rim trim from any inner zipped bib or fixed shearling collar.
- Send front and back photographs of the collar opened flat before ordering.
Snap poppers, buttons & loops: Parajumpers, Woolrich, Fjällräven & Superdry
Models across Parajumpers (Kodiak, Right Hand, Long Bear, Gobi), Woolrich (Arctic Parka), Fjällräven (Nuuk, Nuuk Lite, Expedition), Superdry (Everest), Zavetti Canada (Oshawa), Eddie Bauer (Superior Down) and Alpha Industries (N-3B) frequently combine or alternate between zippers, press-stud poppers, hook-and-loop tabs and elastic button loops. When ordering for a button or snap hood, the fastener count and centre-to-centre spacing are just as important as the total centimetre length.
- Count every button, loop or snap stud along the hood edge.
- Record the distance between adjacent fasteners as well as the total span in cm.
- Check whether the trim also uses velcro end tabs or a wire-brim channel.
Dual-zip hoods: separating the neck hood zip from the outer ruff zip
On technical parkas such as the Columbia Marquam Peak Fusion, L.L.Bean Baxter State Parka and several North Face and Nobis models, the insulated hood zips off the coat collar via a short neck zipper while the fur trim attaches around the front face opening via a second, longer fastener. Always measure and photograph the outer face-rim trim attachment, never the short neck zipper that joins the hood to the jacket body.
- Verify that you are measuring the outer hood brim where the fur sits.
- Keep the hood attached to the coat or laid flat so the brim curve is clear.
- Confirm that you are ordering a fur trim ruff, as the fabric hood itself is not included.
Standard length bands (45–90 cm) and how to request a fit verification
Across all 82 jacket models in our fit library, adult hood attachment tracks generally fall into three length bands: compact hoods (45–54 cm), standard bomber and parka rims (55–72 cm, with 60 cm, 65 cm and 70 cm being the most common stock selections), and extended snorkel or wraparound collars (73–90+ cm). Use our interactive fit verifier on any model fit page or send your measurement and fastening close-ups for a personal review before production.
- Use a flexible centimetre tape and measure twice to confirm repeatability within ±0.5 cm.
- Browse your exact brand collection or model fit page to review model-specific notes.
- Contact our workshop with photos whenever the original trim is missing or altered.
